Chris Ortiz

Documentary and Environmental Portraiture
Photographer, MFA

From Lawrence, Kansas (b. 1982), Chris has had a life-long relationship with photography starting at the age of six. Learning the basics art through his step-father, he quickly developed a love for the camera, as well as print making, ceramics, painting and art history. Chris made it a point to constantly have some medium of art throughout his life. Ultimately, he decided to pursue a bachelors in Art History at Baker University in Baldwin City, Kansas. After graduation from Baker, Chris was early accepted to work on his Master of Fine Arts degree in photography at the Savannah College of Art and Design (SCAD), completing his MFA in November of 2017.

While at Baker University, Chris was employed through the university as the head curator/researcher at the Quayle Historic Bible Collection and Museum. While working at the museum for two years, he was able to curate the major exhibition of the 2013/2014 school year titled "Illuminating the Bible". This exhibition featured original illustration works by artist like Albrecht Durer, Jost Amman, William Blake, Petite Bernard, Virgil Solis, and others. For more information on this exhibition, please click on this link which will take you to the Fox 4 News story on the exhibition.

While at SCAD, Chris’s work focused mostly on Documentary photography while also working with the University of Kansas on one of his most recent major projects Portraits of Latinx Identity. This project was so successful that the university has applied for two more additional grants to expand the project further. His other project, Living with Sam (MFA Thesis) has been used to bring to the public eye illnesses of Depression, Anxiety, and Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder (or PTSD) that people deal with every day. Both collections were well received by both exhibition goers and media.

Chris's approach to photography ranges from photojournalism to documentary to sports photography and studio work, with his main focus being in documentary works. His work, while being visually pleasing, attempts to tell a story to the viewer through a single image. He has taught classes and workshops in documentary photography, photographic history and studio lighting techniques.

He works in both digital and analog techniques, utilizing both a Nikon D300 DSLR and a Yashica MAT - 124G TLR (working in 120 black and white film). He has extensive knowledge of Adobe Photoshop and Darkroom developing techniques.

When Chis isn't behind his camera, he often can be found on his bicycle, riding around Northeastern Kansas, reading books and magazines, watching documentary films, or enjoying a drink or coffee with close friends and family.
